WHERE IS MY SCULPTURE LOCATED?
I built my structure in the pond that sits behind my neighborhood pool. This pond is pretty big and is home to many fish species, insects, and amphibians. My neighborhood pond is two houses down from my house.

A MEDLEY OF NATURE
For this project, we were tasked with going out into nature and creating an environmental sculpture. This project was inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy, an artist who focuses on using only natural materials.

THE FINAL PIECE
This piece, made out of sticks, leaves, and flowers, was inspired by Goldsworthy's piece that consists of sticks stacked in a circle laying on the water. I chose to build this piece on the water and use the materials I did because I felt like they fit in very nicely with the natural materials that were already in this pond. I wanted to use sticks as the support barrier to hold up my structure and make it float on the water. Next, I chose to drop leaves onto the sticks to see where they would land and create a free, wind-blown look. Lastly, I added in a couple wildflowers and dead roses to continue the natural look and add a pop of color.
CHALLENGES I FACED:
Creating my structure was not the hard part, the hard part was getting down to the pond to create it! The pond had a lot of overgrowth with tall grasses and lots of mud surrounding it! It was also very hard to try and push out my structure further into the water. I was wanting to push it out into the middle of the pond to float however, there were lots of sticks and twigs under the water that were pulling my structure downwards, stopping it from moving.
HOW I OVERCAME MY CHALLENGES
Getting down to the pond was my biggest challenge. In order to overcome this, I told myself to basically suck it up and that I was going to get dirty. So, I ran through the high grass, trying not to think about snakes or other little animals, and stood in the mud while I built my sculpture. I sunk in the mud up to my shoes as well as slid a couple times, but it wasn't that bad. I washed my shoes when I got home because I didn't realize how muddy it would be. My last challenge was trying to get close enough to push my structure out into the pond. After making my sculpture, I found a huge stick in the woods and used that to grab up underneath the sticks of my structure, loosening them from the sticks holding them down under water, and pushed it out further. This worked at first but then the overgrowth of the pond won, and I ended up pushing too hard and flipping my structure upside down. My structure fell apart a little bit but it still looked cool upside down sticking out of the pond.
The piece of music I chose is called Water Lily. I chose this piece because when I first heard it, it reminded me of still water with something floating smoothly across it. The music was very happy and upbeat but relaxing at the same time to me. So, this piece of music represented the pond and structure I built because the pond was very still and quiet and I just imagined my piece sitting afloat the calm water.
