Hello! My name is Madison Sivret and I am a graduate student at Appalachian State University. I just graduated in May 2019 with a B.S. in Elementary Education and a minor in Psychology. I am currently pursuing my masters in Reading Education, to grow as a reader, writer, and future teacher.

Here is a backstory about literacy for me: Growing up, I disliked reading. I was never very good at it and in 2nd grade, I had to be pulled out of class for reading intervention help. Due to this, I felt like I was not a good reader and was very discouraged from it. Throughout my schooling, I continued to read solely due to the fact that I was required to for class. My love for reading started to form in college. I loved going into my field experiences and sitting down with students to read with them. I began to experience the real joy of reading a children's book, and not worrying about if I read a word right or not. I love the happiness on students faces as they tell me about their favorite book or about a book they are so excited to read. This is what reading should look like.

I can't wait to watch my future students grow as readers and writers and experience the magical world that literacy can create.

My Family

I was born in Clearwater, Florida and grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina. I am the second oldest of four. My older sister, Kaitlin, is in Physician Assistant school at Campbell University. My younger sister, Jenna, is a sophomore at UNC Charlotte majoring in business. My brother, Kyle, the tallest out of everyone, is a junior in high school. He is getting ready to start his college search! Both of my parents are physical therapists and love what they do.

My Pets

Callie, the German Shepherd, will be 7 years old in February. She loves to wrestle with the cat, go for walks, take off for hours to run in the woods whenever she gets a chance (even though she knows she is not supposed to), and is very scared of loud noises (storms, vacuums, lawn mowers) and getting her nails clipped.

Coby (Jacoby named after a former Red Sox player) is a Lab/Shepard mix and will be 11 on St. Patrick's day. He loves his treats, going for walks, sunbathing in the backyard, taking up the whole bed, and cuddling. He is the biggest teddy bear and loves everyone he meets.

Manny (named after a formed Red Sox player) will be 3 at the end of July. He is the ruler of the dogs, loves his treats, and spending time outside (he only comes inside to eat it seems like). He liked to cuddle on his terms and quietly watches what is going on. His favorite thing to do is to wrestle with Callie, which is very funny!

A little more about me:

  • What I like: traveling, spending time with family & friends, Mexican food, being outdoors (biking, hiking, kayaking), sunflowers, adventures, organizing, lobster, chapstick, books, dogs, movies, New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, goldfish, helping others.

  • What I dislike: when people cut in line, doughnuts, being sad, coke (basically every soda besides sprite), tests, tomatoes, being late, a mess.

  • How I look: I am 5 feet 5 inches tall; I have green eyes; I have light brown hair that is naturally curly/wavy and basically just crazy; my hair reaches about halfway down my back; I have size 9.5 feet, and I always have a smile on my face!

  • What you should know about me...
    • I am adventurous: I am always ready to go to a new place, try something new, or be challenged. A couple summers ago, I went paragliding over the Grand Tetons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and it was a blast. It had never done anything like that before, but it was so thrilling and beautiful.

  • Organized: I LOVE to have things organized and can't stand if my room, things, or car is a mess. I have to write in my planner everyday and make checklists for everything.
  • Southerner?: I am truly a southerner, born and raised in the south, but I would consider myself a mix of both! My parents are from New England and have definitely influenced my accent. My friends joke around with me for saying certain words different: both, room, and snarley are the most common. I have never had sweet tea, collard greens, grits, or barbecue. I do love a good lobster, clam chowder, Vermont maple float, and Boston baked beans.

  • I am a thinker: I am always thinking about things for long periods of time. When I learn about something, I have to think about it for a while and process it. I always find my mind wondering and thinking about random things. Google is my best friend! I am always googling random questions or wonders that pop into my head. For example, I will be in the shower and think "I wonder where chapstick was invented?" My mind is curious and always thinking, but it has helped me learn a lot!
